Mobile telephone subscribers at the Wau Zain office. [©Gurtong]Mobile telephony operator Zain has began adopting the new South Sudanese dialing code for its SIM cards.

The firm is now replacing all its sim cards under the +249 prefix with the new +211 prefix ahead of the 15 December 2011 deadline when the +249 prefix will no longer be in use.

The company’s Wau director told Gurtong that after the lapse of the deadline, no subscriber will be able to make any calls to North Sudan and any other country using the old prefix.

He appealed to the state residents to take advantage of the transition period to change their sim cards in order to avoid any disconnections.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) granted South Sudan the +211 dialling code after its independence in July this year.
