The Bahr el Ghazal University premises located in Wau County [©Gurtong]Students at Bahr el Ghazal University last Monday went on strike against the University administration on failing to provide them with water according to a student who preferred to be anonymous.

It’s not clearly known whether the strike affected University properties since the angry students blocked the media from entering the campus premises for more details.

The State police officers surrounded the campus around 200 meters away from the students to monitor and prevent escalation of the strike to the University administration premises.

Although the students were not involved in any offensive protest outside the Campus, they blocked the main road from public use and motorists while threatening to stone anyone who dared to cross.

They ordered journalists to immediately vacate the Campus compound without interviewing any student and taking pictures but later on they managed to speak to a few students who were blocked outside before the strike started.

A student further informed Gurtong that the strike was not planned to take place but the students have been raising outstanding complains not only because of water but also a delay in their last year’s examination results.

Their sanitation block was very dirty due to lack of water even for drinking, “we have not taken a bath for three days now,” he revealed.

The students are also complaining that since the University was opened, they have not attended any lectures.

This is not the first time that Bahr el Ghazal University students are striking, last year they similarly went on rampage over power blackouts while they were approaching their exams.
