Premier Hellen Zille has been accused of using strongly racist words like “refugees” for countrymen and is now facing serious criticism for her actions. She made a futile attempt to clear her position but the damage her words did was a lot deeper.

Residents of Eastern Cape are protesting and raged with anger over the use of demeaning words used by the premier for the blacks of the Eastern Cape. Premier Hellen Zille called the resident of Eastern Cape attending schools in Western Cape as “refugees”.

Several political leaders and parties have sided with the people of Eastern Cape showing anger and said that the words used by the Premier were extremely insensitive, insulting, degrading, and even dangerous to a certain extent. She called the residents of Eastern Cape “refugees” while speaking on the matter of overcrowding in a protest in Grabouw which has quite a few black students.

The residents protested that there are quite a few other non-black students enrolled in the school who are not currently living in Western Cape but the premier only targeted the blacks, which is clearly an act of discrimination and racism.

Zille did not realize the extent of the harm she had done and even went on to write on her twitter responding to one of the questions that “Refugees are people who have to escape because their rights are violated. That describes E Cape pupils exactly”. Only to later realize her mistake after receiving a bunch of angry responses, she tried to fix the damage by saying “For the record – the term refugee is also used for people who “have been forced to migrate within their home countries”.
