Speaking upon return from a 3-day United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in the Brazilian capital Rio de Janeiro, Gore said sustainable economic development can only be attained if the environment is conserved.

He said South Sudan should consider the values of democracy, peace, freedom, transparency and accountability in order to boost economic growth in the fledgling nation.

Gore said the conference dubbed “the future we want”, brought together world leaders, along with thousands of participants from governments, the private sector, NGOs and other groups.

“ A number of resolutions were passed aiming at boosting the observation of respecting democracy in a bid to attain sustainability. Many countries in the world, particularly Africa were urged to respect democratic values on grounds they are the basis for a comprehensive economic growth”.

“It was noted that countries should involve their people in the processes of economic development. They must see the importance of freedom of peace, human rights, rule of law and order as well as gender equality”, Gore said.

He called for peace in South Sudan, saying no development can take place in a turbulent country.
