Bishop Hillary Luate of Yei Diocese has told Gurtong that young men and women cannot meet the marriage requirements
Bishop Luate called upon the communities, churches and chiefs to discuss the issues of marriage, adding that ‘there is great need to discuss marriage requirements.’
“The youth are forced to cohabit while others commit suicide after losing on prospective partners”, he said.
The Bishop said this has led to immoral practices such as illegal sex trade, eloping of young girls, rape and illegitimate children being born without parents.
Some communities in South Sudan are required to pay dowries in hard currencies like US dollars making the poor communities vulnerable and unable to marry.
