Families have been rendered homeless in Makuach Awiit residential areas around Aweil town.

“Our living condition near the road is terrifying. We have no shelter”, said Akec Lual Akoon, one of the displaced in the area.

The displaced families have been camping along the road waiting for assistance. The families have been promised to be relocated to Apada Camp which is five miles away from the town.

There fear of a disease outbreak due to stagnant water with many fearing malaria and waterborne diseases could break out.

According to the Aweil Civil Hospital Medical Doctor Garang Thomas, nearly 40 percent of the population is suffering from malaria.

Access to clean drinking water has been a problem since most of the wells in the area have been contaminated by dirty water.

Most roads have deteriorated with many becoming impassable following the heavy rains in the area.
