“The idea of the Youth Service Program is to target youths who are coming out of high school and involves giving them an orientation on different skills,” said Hiteng.
He said the plan is currently undergoing paper work and has been endorsed by the President and efforts are on underway to intensify the move.
He explained that the program will involve training of the youths on different courses such as; carpentry, catering, Masonry and road construction .
The Minister said that the move is also aimed at intensifying the involvement of the youths in nation building by inculcating into them different values of work in the country.
He said that a team has been assigned the duties and will be meeting the Ministry of Higher Education this week in an effort to discuss some of the provisions.
Hiteng explained that the move is aimed at addressing the inadequate skilled labour in the country.
On Saturday, the South Sudanese government officially launched the International Youths Day in Juba.
During the launch, Hiteng said the day was very important to be marked by South Sudan as a new nation as it gives forum to discuss issues concerning the development of youths in the country.
“The importance of this occasion to day is we mark the celebration of the International Youths Day like when we celebrated our independence,” Hiteng said.
He said the day was last celebrated in South Sudan in 2008, adding that South Sudan now needs to officially recognize it since it gained independence.
Hiteng said that the government needs to invest in the youths as leaders of tomorrow underscoring their importance in the socio-economic development and nation building.
He pointed out that, more investment on the youths should be channeled to education.
The day marked under the theme “Building A Better World: Partnering With Youth.”
South Sudan had decided to engage the youths in a two day youth conference on peace building, volunteerism, participation and civic engagement with youth participants from all the ten states.
Youth in South Sudan constitute a large percentage of the population according to the national statistics conducted in 2008.
Reports indicate that the youth compose of the largest unemployed population with many also illiterate.
The International Youth Day is commemorated every year on 12 August to encourage youth around the world to organize activities to raise awareness about the situation of youths in their countries.
It aims to highlight good practices in developing and expanding successful partnerships with young people, and to put forward concrete commendations on how Governments, the United Nations and stakeholders around the world should address the issue of the youths.
