Jonglei Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk has acknowledged that the use of force in the recovery of the stolen animals is not good for the peaceful co-existence of the communities.
“The security committee ordered the committee to go to chiefs and collect the cows,” said Juuk.
Members of Parliament had requested the state government to look for better ways of returning back the animals stolen from the Murle community.
According to the governor, the army went to the cattle camps and collected 418 cows and it happened that some of the cows released belong to the people who had nothing to do with the stealing.
The situation has created misunderstanding with some members demanding to get their cattle back with the governor declaring that the animals must be returned to their owners in 14 days.
The security committee decided to handle the matter peacefully as the court procedures could take a long time to conclude when the owners of the cattle are waiting for justice.
Juuk said that the state government is working to ensure that peace prevails in the state since the disarmament process started early this year.
