“The United Nations fixed this day in every year to be a peace day for everybody in the world, peace is very important for everyone,” said Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk.

Manyang said that all South Sudanese citizens are members of the United Nations and therefore should be united as one.

Peace can be undermined by hurting one another and one does not have proper shelter, then they are not mentally peaceful. He said that we can eliminate suffering and bring peace by creating a good environment for all.

Manyang said they are celebrating the peace day because of the struggles and experiences witnessed before the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement with Sudan in 2005.

“We fought the civil war so that we create peace for our people in South Sudan.  I call up on all the members of my government to work hard in serving the citizens,” he said.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) State Coordinator Ibrahima Ndiaye asked the people to observe a minute of silence in honour of the victims who lost their lives during the liberation struggle and urged parents to educate children and not allow them be recruited into rebel fighting groups.

The International Day of Peace also known as World Peace Day is commemorated on 21 September every year and has been set aside by the United Nations to provide an opportunity for individuals, organisations and nations to create practical acts of peace.

The International Day of Peace was first established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence.  In 2002, the General Assembly officially declared September 21 as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace.

The day is devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.
