He outlined the austerity measures being undertaken by South Sudan as a setback to development and urged citizens to handle financial austerity measure period with plans to bring food from foreign countries to cover the gap caused by shortcoming of rainfall.

Chol said that the purpose of celebrating a New Year is not for the sake of celebrating but should be a new outlook to issues related to our vision and mission, aims and objectives, and map out a new direction; new approach and new understanding to achieve the goal of building a new nation.

He said 2012 had been a year of difficulties to people of South Sudan that had experience border dispute and shutdown of oil flow in the country.

“We have undergone some difficult circumstances as a nation among them was aggression from Sudan at Pan-thou [Heglig] and other border areas and the shutdown of oil production which resulted to austerity measures that you are experiencing today,” he said.

As a state, there were insecurity incidences among communities and neighbouring states related to cattle rustling and revenge attacks.

He stated that the state government and citizens must apply the spirit of comradeship, patriotism, peace, love and harmony to breach the gap of humanity that has been lost over the years.

“It is high time now for us to focus on issues of development and say goodbye to issues that were dragging us away from our mainstream the SPLM vision of prosperity, unity and progress,” he said.
