Dr. Anne Itto, the party Deputy Secretary General while addressing the press today in Juba on the arrangements of the convention said that the paper work dubbed as “basic papers” is now done and ready.

She said the SPLM standing committees tasked with researching on the different issues to be compiled and transformed into policies have finished consultations with the grassroots and the party has set the convention to kick off from 05 February.

“The objective is to review the party’s structure, its policies and leadership,” she said.

Dr. Anne said key issues to focus on during the conference is the leadership structure of the party and its policies which the government works implements.

Some of the reforms will be on agriculture, education, the economy and other basic services.

“We have now realized that it’s a new era, a new stage of development and SPLM is doing all this so that we can build our South Sudan so that we can provide capable leadership to help South Sudan realize its dreams,” she said.

SPLM in recent months and years has come under strong public criticism because of the current socio-economic and political situation in the country.

The inter-ethnic conflicts that have left thousands of people killed since the signing of the peace accord in 2005 and the high cost of living, failure in resolving post secession issues with Khartoum are the issues that the party leadership and government is to tackle.

Last week a senior SPLM member who had served as Minister in Khartoum before the break away of South Sudan from Sudan had called for reforms in the government and the SPLM party policies.

His call came after a report unveiled by SUDD Institute implicating government elements of involvement into the current insecurity situation in the country.
