“We are going to carry out two campaigns for keeping Malakal clean. And in these campaigns, we will stop people from the habit of throwing wastes at random. We will not compromise with those who defecate, urinate or throw metals and cartons anyhow,” said Mathew Dechuol.

Mathew advised the residents not to defecate or urinate anywhere in order to keep the environment clean, adding that dirty surroundings would invite many diseases to the population.

The Director asked people to immediately stop defecating at the cemetery and appealed to the residents in Malakal town to only bury their dead at the cemetery but not in homes.

Some communities in South Sudan bury their dead ones at their homes which illustrates their love for the departed relatives however; the health officer disputed this habit as it would invite diseases in to the house.

“Our people still bury their dead ones at the home compounds. This is not correct. When the body gets decayed there will be many germs and bacteria that would feed on the dead body. Bad things which are dangerous for human health would evaporate out from the tomb and that brings diseases to kill people. We don’t encourage that,” he said.

He said that the government has provided a law which protects the environment and those involved will be answerable.

He urged the town population to support the ‘Keep Malakal Clean’ campaign and participate directly because it is for the benefit of all.

He asked people to stop blaming the government of not keeping the town clean but to try clean their nearest environments saying that would be
a great contribution.

He urged the youth to help in making the campaign a success.
