The 10-year-old minor was raped and consequently died last week. The angry women who were joined by a few men demanded that the justice be done to the suspected rapist identified as Senya Ide Lino.
In a joint statement, the women condemned the rape and urged the different stakeholders including the Ministry of Justice, Interior and Human Rights institutions to take the issue seriously for justice to be realized.
“We are concerned about the common interference by individuals sitting in public offices and the high level of impunity in rape cases,” the statement partly reads.
They expressed disappointments over the way of handling issues related to gender based violence, saying there is continued impunity, lack of accountability and unfair trials of perpetrators.
“We urge the international agencies including the UN agencies and embassies to sanction the government for violation of human rights,” the statement adds.
The women also demanded the immediate trial of the suspect and called on the government to ensure speedy hearing of rape cases based on evidence.
According to one of the women, Bena Mark, Senya’s case is not the first case and they are very angry with him.. “We are not happy about what happened to the child. For us women, this is not the first case,” she said.
Addressing the women, the Central Equatoria State Minister of Gender and Social Development Hon. Mary Apayi assured the women that they will pursue the case to see justice.
She however said that the crime was committed by an individual but not government and urged the women to help the police in reporting such cases.
