The Unity State interim government security coordinator Major John Bol Mayak said that the South Sudan army force led by Major General Puol Jang Top launched the attack but were dislodged.

There was no information from the government side on the planned attack.

The oil production at Unity State oil fields had been halted last week as the technical teams working in the fields have been evacuated.

Oil production accounts for more than 95 percent of the country’s economy, and the sector has been affected with oil companies also flying out their employees after the death of some oil workers.

Petroleum companies started pulling out staff from oil-rich Unity state after several local oil workers were killed and there has been fighting in Bentiu after a senior SPLA Commander defected from the South Sudan army to ex-Vice President Dr. Riek Machar’s forces.

Mayom County is about 80 kilometres away from Bentiu.
