The deployment of the UPDF is to assist the South Sudan government in fighting rebels currently in several parts of the country.

In a statement to the Citizens Newspaper, Manyang said the deployment of the UPDF can contribute in securing the fledgling nation.

“I am very appreciative of the Ugandan Parliament in regards to approving the presence of its army in our country,” Kuol said.

“The presence of the UPDF in the country is as it came in the Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries to support the Sudan People’s Liberation Army against the rebels and help in securing the capital Juba. But in all we expect more numbers,” the Minister added.

He said the number of the UPDF on deployment is not fixed but will be determined by the situation on the ground.

On Tuesday the Ugandan parliament backed its government for the deployment of its forces to neighboring South Sudan to help in defense following current fighting between government and rebels in the country.

The deployment of the Ugandan troops in South Sudan however, had been warned earlier on by the United Nations as external intervention that may fuel the crisis.

Already the rebels on the negotiations with the South Sudan government in Addis Ababa to end the crisis in the country have called for Uganda to reconsider its decision and withdraw its forces out of the country.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in which Uganda is a member to is currently brokering peace talks between the South Sudan government and the rebels.

The instability in South Sudan is feared as a threat to the regional stability. Already thousands of South Sudanese refugees have been displaced to Uganda following the violence.
