Recent trends have shown a considerable change in Canada’s political financing landscape as the federal Liberals revealed on Friday to have had gathered more than $4.3 million in donations in the final three months of 2013, including $2.9 million in December alone. These figures of fundraising numbers illustrates the power of a political party to have more money for attack ads, research and events, and indicate a larger number of politically engaged and motivated supporters.
Previously, the Conservatives have had the precedence of gathering considerably more donations compared to other federal parties when it comes to raising money due to their well-refined fundraising operation and a strong and dependable network of donors across the country. However, the recent figure unveiled by Liberal leader, Justin Trudeau, in an email addressed to party members and supporters is the largest achievement the party has had since corporate donations were banned in 2006, placing them right in competition with the Tories’ league for the first time.
According to the email, Liberal party alleged that the fact about 43,000 Canadians contributing to the party’s cause between October and December is a cause for celebration as it signifies revamped public interest in the third-place party. According to previous statistics, less than 45,000 Canadians donated to the Liberals in all of 2012, whereas less than 50,000 did so in 2011 despite that year’s federal election. It is noticeable here that the Conservatives also managed to exceed in a desperate bid to out-fundraise each other in December.
