Addressing his caucus in a speech on Friday, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair made several promises, though without any particular details, in Ottawa for a second day of strategy meetings in preparation for the resumption of Parliament on Jan. 27. Mr. Mulcair’s speech was primarily aimed at boosting the morale of his MPs, however no groundbreaking announcements were made by the NDP leader in context of policy making.
Mr. Mulcair announced that he will soon be making a “pan-Canadian” speaking tour starting from next week during which he will personally travel around the country to collect policy ideas from Canadians about how the government can get rid of the pressures caused by rising cost of living. He alleged that these suggestions will form the backbone of the party’s platform. Speaking to his caucus’s MPs on Friday, Mulcair alleged that the 2015 election campaign begins “right now.” He added that Canadians are getting “nickel and dimed by two-, three-, four-dollar ATM charges or getting hit with whopping interest rates on a payday loan.”
However, Mulcair refrained from proposing any concrete solutions for out-of-work families struggling to pay bills, however, he did highlight his party policy to raise corporate tax rates and its opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline plan. In addition to that, The NDP leader also vowed to continue making Stephen Harper’s life difficult in the House of Commons, especially in case of the ongoing Senate scandal and the Conservatives’ “culture of corruption.” He alleged that “I promise you, it’s going to be even tougher for (Harper) in 2014.”
