Authorities in Warrap State have said that about three people have died by snakes’bites in the floods which have affected Greater Gogrial Counties. Warrap State Minister for Information, Hon. Paul Dhel Gum, said the government is still assessing the situation and that the most affected areas are in Gogrial East County where three deaths by snakes’ bites have been confirmed. About two people are also reported to have drowned due to over flooding in the area.

According to Gum, the flooding was caused by heavy rainfall in the region in the last few months and it is destroying homes in the state.

“Heavy rainfalls in the state and subsequent underground water flow merged to cause the flooding. In Gogrial East, two sunk in flood water and 3 died from snake bite,” Gum stated. Gum said that other counties were similarly affected by the floods.

“In the rest of the five counties, houses are damaged and people are displaced to high-lands. The state government is planning to conduct rapid assessment to find ways and mechanisms to support the victims and put in place structures that will avert such natural hazards in
the future,” he said.

Gum said that the roads are damaged, resulting in the rise in market prices with most of essential goods either limited or not available for towns’ consumption.

He said the state government has embarked on sensitization to make the public aware of thedanger of snakes and other waterborne diseases during flooding.
