The community at large and authority leaders in the county have complained severally that the abuse of alcohol has destroyed the traditional positive culture as many youths are now engaged in alcoholism.

A national Member of Parliament, Salva Mathok Gengdit has welcomed the ban and urged the business community to refrain from selling any kind of alcohol in Gogrial East County.
Mathok Gengdit said beers, be it imported from neighboring countries or Juba, including the locally made siko -the local distilled alcohol-have been banned and anyone found selling will be punished for defying the rules that have been set.

“The Community and the local government in the area have made a very nice decision to stop the beer business in Gogrial East County as it destroys our people and homes. Everybody who drinks in the community doesn’t produce anything and is not good for the welfare of the family therefore, resulting into the separations of couples and many more.”

He added that families have begun reuniting after the ban was imposed.
“Now that there is no more beer and siko again for them to drink in the markets people are re-uniting with friends, relatives and couples after the ban. Husbands who had abandoned responsibilities have

returned home and the women have also returned to their houses and that is a good move. We cannot condemn it,”

However, Mathok said the only alcohol allowed to be locally brewed is “muon-her” locally made from sorghum and “malek-tol” locally made from simsim. Any other kind has been prohibited.

Salva Mathok has warned that anyone who plans to bring in the business of alcohol in the county will be punished accordingly.
