“The fight begun from 8am till 2pm and a total of those confirmed dead are 77 people and hundreds more missing” said a security officer.

RUMBEK, March 16 2015 (Gurtong) –Inter-clan clashes between the Pakam, Kuei and Rup section that erupted on Sunday in Rumbek, Lakes State has claimed 77 lives.

The criminal investigation department in conjunction with the national security released a report indicating that the clashes erupted in Pulbar cattle camp between the communities of the Pakam, Kuei and Rup section.

“The fight begun from 8am till 2pm and a total of those confirmed dead are 77 people and hundreds more missing” said a security officer.

According to primary reports “26 Pakam section youth are dead, 12 youth from  Ber section are dead , 10 youth from Ajiek section are dead, 10 youth from Bhor section are dead , 11 youth from Kueth section are dead , 5 youth from Panyon section are dead, 3 youth from Dhei section are dead; and still many  are missing. The total dead are 77 people and yet it may rise,” Continued the Security officer who requested for anonymity.

The State Minister of Information and Communication, Dhieu Wal said that accessing the battle zone has been a challenge because the area is swampy.

“It is a very swampy place – the youth are fighting there and our forces could not reach there because of poor road connection.”

A youth activist in the state, Moses Maker, said that the fresh inter-clan clashes are as a result of hate speech by government officials and elders which trickles down to the community members.

“It is absence of justice leading our youth to engage in clashes – it is because of hate speeches by elders and politicians that cause these clashes. Because leadership in Juba is not listening to the youth – it is because the Caretaker Governor is not listening to youth,” said Maker.
