ABYEI, 15 June 2015 [Gurtong]-Nine people have been reported dead and three others wounded after armed militia from the Sudan border attacked one of the Counties in Abyei.

Aloor Dholbek, Abyei’s Information Minister said organized force including the South Sudan rebels and Arab armed militias carried out a huge attack on Dieer Village and clashed with local youths last week on Wednesday.

“What happened on 10th June 2015 at around 7 am, is that a group of armed militias besides the South Sudan rebels allied to Sudan attacked Dieer and Tolmach villages South West of Abyei town and clashed with local youths leaving dead bodies on the ground and others wounded” he said.

Two AK47 rifles were recovered from the militia with them losing seven of their members while on the Dinka Ngok side two.

Three Dinka Ngok including a high school student were wounded during the attack.

The Information Minister however, encouraged the residents of Abyei to concentrate on farming and should not be threatened by the attacks.

“I want to say to Abyei youth Oyee! for protecting the area and I am asking them to continue with that effort for the security of Abyei people. I am also asking the locals to return to their villages because their youths are on the ground to defend the area from armed militias.”
