Hundreds of South Sudanese convened on Thursday during Martyrs Day at the St. Mary’s Parish in Western Bahr el Ghazal State to pay tribute to heroes and heroines who lost their lives during the liberation struggle.

WAU, July 30th 2015 [Gurtong] – The day also marked the remembrance of Dr John Garang De Mabior, former Leader of the South Sudan ruling party SPLM, who perished in a helicopter crash on the 30th July 2005.

The residents who gathered near the SPLM ruling party secretariat office at peace square, including government officials, including the Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Rizik Zacharia Hassan lit candles in the memory of the martyrs.

Dr. John Garang’s  successor,  President Salva Kiir declared 30 July of every year to be a remembrance day for the death of Dr. Jong Garang  and all South Sudanese during the more than two decades of the civil war.

Dr. John Garang was sworn in as the First Vice President of Republic of Sudan and President of the semi-autonomous region of Southern Sudan which has now become the Republic of South Sudan.
