The United Nations Regional Coordinator in South Sudan David Gressly has advised leaders of the semi-autonomous region to prepare for an effectual management of the newest state.

Gressly told the media in Eastern Equatoria last week that the likely overwhelming victory for South Sudan will mark the beginning of new challenges that must be overcome to steer the new country to prosperity.

“Congratulations! This is just but a beginning. You must now prepare not only to govern but also to nurture your new nation as huge challenges already lie ahead”, he said on his visit that took him to Lafon, Torit and Nimule.

Gressly urged the international community and other bodies to recognise and respect the outcome of the vote regardless of which side emerges victorious.

“The leaders must now prepare to manage the new nation and reconstructing the new country. They should also serve citizens to their expectations among others”, he said.

He described the polling process as impressive, secure, peaceful and smooth, adding that his anticipation is that the exercise will be concluded credibly.
