At least eleven thousand people who fled Maar village of Pakeer Payam in Twic East County following a recent attack which killed dozens of people have returned and are receiving food and non-food items.

BOR 17 December 2015 [Gurtong]- Following the incident a number of Maar residents escaped to swampy areas, most of them went to Dhiam-Dhaim and Pakeerdit with a few fleeing to Bor County for safety.

The Commissioner of Twic East County, Hon. Dau Akoi Jurkuch confirmed to Gurtong on Thursday that they have now returned to their homes with a few still expected to follow suit.

“They are even receiving their ratio in Maar. They are being given food items and non-food items. A total of 11,000 was the number only identified out of 13,000. So may be the 2000 is still in hiding”, Akoi explained.

According to officials, the World Food Programme is supplying the food assistance to the returnees through the indigenous NGOs operating in the County and Community based organisation.

The Commissioner said that there are still IDPs moving from Twic East to Bor County as a result of insecurity.

He however, said that there is some calm now in Bor.
