Sikkim EarthquakeAt least 18 people lost their lives in Sikkim on Sunday evening as 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit India and Nepal. People from different places died, 7 in Sikkim, 4 in West Bengal 2 in Bihar and 5 in Nepal, the sources reported.

It was 6:10 pm when the earthquake hit certain parts in India and Nepal. Mangan was the epicenter which was 64 KM from Gangtok in Sikkim. Apart from this area, shocks were also felt in Delhi and other parts of North India.

For rescue and relief operations the army and air force was deployed in Sikkim but unfortunately rain stopped them to operate effectively. According to Met department officials, it is likely to continue to rain for the next 24 hours.

Army personnel consist of medical teams with first aid kits and engineers. From the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) 400 personnel have reached Bagdogra for rescue and relief operations.

In West Bengal, Jalpaiguri, Siliguri and Kalimpong at least four people have been killed. The earthquake also killed two Army personnel.

Moreover, the Met office director GC Debnath said, "The possibility of a major quake in north Bengal is quite high and earthquakes can cause landslides."

A boundary wall of the British embassy collapsed and three persons were killed in Kathmandu.
