Sonia GandhiSonia Gandhi, the Congress President has decided to come forward to extinguish the 2G spectrum fire. She held separate meetings with the Home Minister P Chidambaram and the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The increasing impression of strong rivalry in the Cabinet was making the government weaker. The intervention of the party President gained urgency in connection with the government’s venerability. On the other hand, many critics see it as a “trigger for the Finance Minister note on spectrum sale” that laid the blame for the “mess Chidambaram’s doorstep.”

P Chidambaram conveyed his disappointment over this development to the Congress president. He met Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence for 10 minutes.

The government has decided to forcefully defend Chidambaram as he will become weak if the apex court orders to probe Chidambaram’s role in the spectrum allocation. "There is no criminality in the role of the then finance minister. The first-come-first-served policy and entry fee were decisions of the government," a senior minister said.

On Tuesday, in the apex court, the government’s views will be presented by Counsel PP Rao. Mukherjee told the media that he would speak on the issue only after the prime minister returns from US trip. Mukherjee, on Monday, talked to the reporters at the Delhi airport.
