PranabPranab Mukherjee stepped forward to defend P Chidambaram, the Home Minister against 2G scam.

Mukherjee wrote a four-page letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to defend P Chidambaram.

Mukherjee said the “finance ministry’s note of March 25 was based on deliberations” which was among the ministries. He said that it should not be interpreted as a decision on anyone’s responsibility.

The letter of Mukherjee has gained importance for many reasons. This letter refutes the widely held perception that the controversial note suggested Chidambaram had agreed in to Raja’s stubborn insistence to give away 2G Spectrum in 2008 at 2001 prices. As during that time Chidambaram was a Finance Minister in UPA-1.

The carefully composed letter opposes many wrong impressions. It opposes that the “Finance Minister was behind the note which was seen as a result of the widely perceived rivalry between the two senior ministers.”

The letter detailed the process of making the March 25 note. It said “the communication was prepared at the instance of the PMO” to falsify a common position for the different ministries to take on the 2G controversy.
