A fire incident at Karachi’s four-star hotel at city’s Shahrah-i-Faisal, Regent Plaza Hotel, took 12 lives and injured 75 others early Monday. The fire started from the kitchen on the ground floor and swept through the building, trapping scores of hotel guests in their rooms. The fire brigade sent three trucks to battle the blaze on site and started an operation to rescue the guests.

A press release issued by the Saddar Police Station explained that the firefighters were able to contain the blaze after three hours but 11 people were killed until then. Karachi mayor, Waseem Akhtar, addressed the media outside the hotel said alleged that the cause of the incident could not be uncovered yet but he also pointed out that the hotel had “no fire exits or fire alarms”

Head of the emergency services at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Dr Seemin Jamali, confirmed that “we have received 11 dead bodies and 75 injured,” adding that the injured included those who had fractured bones after jumping from hotel windows to escape or were hurt shattered glass. She added that remaining injured patients were mostly treated for smoke inhalation. According to Dr Jamali, six men, including three doctors and the hotel’s front desk manager, and five women were among the dead. The deceased also included a couple from Punjab who were in the city to attend a wedding in the metropolis. She assured that all three foreigners affected by the fire are in a stable condition.
