Entangled in controversy for overcharging her hosts by inflating travel bills, Team Anna member Kiran Bedi said trustees of her NGO — India Vision Foundation — have instructed her travel agent to return the excess amount to the hosts.
“Further asking me to travel as per invite, trustees have instructed travel agent to return the balance amount forthwith,” Bedi wrote on Twitter.
Bedi came under attack after publishing of a report saying she had inflated air travel bills when invited by NGOs and other institutions for seminars or meetings. The report said she used to avail discounts on air tickets using her gallantry medal and then overcharge her hosts.
Earlier, defending herself, Bedi had said: “The organizations voluntarily pay me for business class tickets, but I duly inform them and save money for travels which are for good causes, but cannot provide remuneration… there is no personal gain.”
However, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh ridiculed Bedi’s statement to return the excess money to her hosts and said by this yardstick corrupt people should be absolved of their crimes if they return back money earned through illegal means.
“This means if corrupt people return money, they will also be absolved of their crimes.
Then why A Raja has been kept in jail. Raja can also return money and come out,” Singh commented.
Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said: “A movement cannot be successful if its leaders are not of clean image. In such cases people loose faith in such movements.”
