PML-N Chief Nawaz SharifPML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has accused the PPP-led federal government of harming democracy.

Talking to newsmen at the residence of MNA Baleeghur Rehman here on Wednesday, he said his party had pledged to support the government under the Charter of Democracy (CoD) to help it solve the people`s problems. Had the government responded positively to the gesture and adhered to the CoD, democracy could have flourished in the country.

Nawaz Sharif, however, urged people to continue to support democracy because it could help bring about a healthy change in their lives.

He recalled that during his tenure as prime minister, the motorway was constructed, JS Thunder aircraft were built, Pakistan became a nuclear power and 8.5 per cent GDP growth rate was achieved, but the present government had ruined almost all national institutions.

Replying to a question, Nawaz Sharif said he supported the demand for the restoration of Bahawalpur province. He said he also favoured the revival of the Bahawalpur state and promised to strive for it.

He parried a question about a proposal for en masse resignation of his party`s lawmakers from the assemblies. The PML-N chief praised former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and said that he was in constant touch with him. If Qureshi wanted to meet him he was more than welcome, he added.
