Ghatkopar blastAn accused in the 2003 Ghatkopar blast case was arrested by a joint team of the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad, Tamil Nadu Special Investigation Team and UP Police here on Tuesday in connection with a case registered in Tamil Nadu.

Identifying him as Taufiq Abdullah, the police said the arrest had been made in connection with a case filed against him for carrying detonators in Kodangaiyur in Tamil Nadu in 2002.

Taufiq is a resident of Adriam Pattinam in Tanjore in Tamil Nadu.

He was arrested in connection with a blast in a bus in Ghatkopar in 2003, in which two people were killed. He was let off by a POTA court in 2005 in Mumbai.

During interrogation it was revealed that the accused allegedly had links with the Lashkar-e-Toiba, Muslim Defence Force and some other terrorist outfits, especially in Saudi Arabia.

“Taufiq was in touch with terrorists and had formed organisations called New Vision and Iravian Oruvane to carry out anti-national activities,” said Subesh Kumar Singh, Additional Director General (Law and Order).

Western UP ATS chief Rajeev Narayan Mishra said, “We received information that Taufiq, who was wanted in Tamil Nadu, would be in the area. We arrested him from Sector 24 in the afternoon.”

“He has revealed that he was trying to flee to Nepal, and was in the process of arranging for tickets and a passport. He will now be taken to Tamil Nadu and tried there,” Mishra said.
