Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh made remarks on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) Conference in New Delhi on Thursday.

The Prime Minister requested the relevant authorities to make payment to the concerned employees within the duration of half a month and ensure timely payments thereon. At the same time, the Chief of Congress Sonia Gandhi commented that the basic ingredient to the success of the scheme is to give power to grassroots level organizations.

The yearly congregation of MNREGA became the platform to coincide Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh’s thought process. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke on the occasion as follows, “There are many challenges in implementation of MNREGA. The biggest worry is delayed wage payment to workers. They should get in within 15 days. We need to expand the reach of banks and post offices to do it.” 

He went on to pin point that such delays in payments and wages urge the economically stricken population to fall under heavy burdens of debt. PM also appreciated Jairam Ramesh, minister MNREGA on successful completion of the scheme in Maoist regions.

The chief of Congress seriously condemned corruption in the scheme and gave her opinion on the scheme. She said, “Panchayat plays a big role in implementation of MNREGA and we need to empower these grassroots organizations.”
