The regional lawmakers of Pakistan began casting their votes for the vacant seats in the senate on Friday. The polling was scheduled to continue until 4pm.

The need for polling arose due to the retirement of 50 senate members who have completed their six year term in the senate and now new members shall be brought in for the senate to have complete sessions once again. According to various anticipations, Pakistan People’s Party is going to turn out to dominate the senate seats once the results are announced.

The polling conducted today was for 45 seats since nine of the vacant seats had unopposed senators already appointed. 98 senate members have taken part in the polling belonging to various mainstream political parties of the country.

According to the division of seats, each province has equal number of seats, after the quota of seats for FATA and the center. Each province has to have an additional seat for minorities, raising the total number of senators in the House of Representatives to 104 from 100. This is brought in effect of the 20th amendment unanimously passed by the constitution which required a member of the minorities section from each province to be present in the senate.

As per Pakistan’s Standard Time (PST) polling has stopped and results will be announced shortly today.
