The Supreme Court of Pakistan rejected the apology submitted by PPP candidate in Tando Mohammad Khan, Waheeda Shah for assaulting an assistant presiding officer.

SC also criticized the ruling Pakistan People’s Party and the police of Sindh for not acting upon the incident appropriately and declared that the act carried out by Waheeda Shah was “shameful” and has damaged the image of the country in international forums.

Waheeda Shah was declared to be winning with a significant majority during the by-elections taking place on Saturday last week but the decision was held back by the Election Commission as the video of Waheeda Shah assaulting the polling staff has emerged on each and every television channel creating a hoopla for justice.

She was caught on camera slapping one of the polling staff members and tongue lashing another.

Upon inappropriate action by the Election Commission, ruling party, and the police, Supreme Court took a suo motu regarding the case and Ms. Shah was asked to appear before the court on Friday. The accused Waheeda Shah appeared for the court hearing on Friday hiding her face from the camera and submitted an apology to the court which it rejected on the grounds of considering it a crime much more serious than the killing of a youth members last year by a paramilitary troops.

Charges levied on Waheeda Shah could end up in two years of imprisonment with a hefty loan amount to pay.
