The Ministry of Defence made an announcement Tuesday morning declaring that the allowance of all National Servicemen in all departments and ranks which include Singapore Civil Defence Force, Singapore Police Force, and Singapore Armed Forces will receive an increment of S$60 in their allowance effective from the coming month.

The increment will raise the allowance of all servicemen serving the nation from S$420 to S$480 from 1st of April, 2012. The last time allowance for national servicemen was reviewed in 2009 when it was raised by S$20. The raise in the allowance will expectedly raise the income of more than 350,000 employees working for the security of the country.

The initiative taken to review the allowance packages of all national servicemen across the board was suggested in the parliament on Tuesday morning when MP Ong Teng Koon urged the Ministry of Defence to compensate the men at work according to their skills and the level of risk they put themselves by going to work every day.

After several discussions in the parliament with the ministry of defence regarding the budget of the ministry, the raise in announcement was finalized today. Ng Eng Heng from the Ministry of Defence made the announcement in the parliament on Tuesday saying, “Even as we call upon each NSman to do his part to defend Singapore, Mindef (the Ministry of Defence) regularly looks for ways to recognize their contributions. I am pleased to announce that the rank allowance for all servicemen in the SAF, SPF and SCDF will be increased across all ranks.”
