Rahul Dravid announces retirement from first class international and domestic cricket commenting that its time the next generation be given the opportunity to lead and represent India.

He gave his farewell speech on Friday leaving his fans in a mixed feeling where they expressed remorse over his retirement but felt proud of his career as a cricketer. Dravid, 39, made the announcement to a media gathering in Bangalore with ex-leg spinner Anil Kumble and president of BCCI N. Srinivasan present besides him.

Dravid has the second highest number of runs scored in international test cricket. He has 13,288 runs in 164 test matches he has played which include 36 centuries. He is the first cricketer to have resigned from the national team after India was defeated nine consecutive times in test matches right after winning the world cup.

He said, “"I would like to announce my retirement from international and domestic first-class cricket. It has been 16 years since I played my first test for India. I feel it’s time for me to move on. I have had a wonderful time but now it’s time for a new generation of young players to make their own history and to take the Indian cricket team even further. Being away from my family became harder and harder through the years and I look forward now to spending time at home and doing the simple things, like just taking my sons [Anvay and Samit] to school”.
