According to various reports, dozens of Taliban militants attacked a prison in Bannu on Sunday and set free more than 400 prisoners from the jail which included the criminal on death row for attempting to murder former president of Pakistan Pervez Musharaf.

The superintendent of Bannu jail Zahid Khan spoke to the media and informed, “Between 1:30am and 2am, dozens of armed militants stormed the prison and attacked the facility from all sides with heavy weapons.” He also informed that the number of militants attacking the jail could be somewhere around 200 and expressed fear that the attack was planned to set free one of their leaders who was sentenced for attempting to kill President Musharaf.

The responsibility of the attack was claimed by the spokesperson of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. Speaking on the phone Ehsanullah Ehsan said, “We attacked the Bannu prison and got our special members freed. In a couple of days when all of them have reached their designated places we will issue details about them. At the moment I cannot give you exact numbers.”

One of the security officers at the prison said that the attack went on for about two hours with militants attacking the prison via grenades and shooting from moving vehicles around the jail.
