The former President of BJP Bangaru Laxman has brought the renowned political party of India some concrete embarrassment as he was convicted of taking bribe 11 years ago when he was the chairperson of the party. The conviction orders were passed on Friday.

Judge of the Additional Session, Kanwal Jeet Arora, announced that his lawyer was not successful in convincing the court of otherwise of the allegations. Therefore, she pronounced him accused of taking a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh from a fake dealer of arms and further recommending him to the Ministry of Defence to give the contract. Mr. Laxman was caught on camera taking the bribe in the headquarters of his party office and was forced to step down from the leadership of the party. Mr. Laxman was taken into custody and thereby transferred to Tihar jail after completion of all legal formalities. Lawyer of Laxman had filed for a bail right after he was convicted. However, the court refused to look into the bail request and adjourned the session on remarks, "after sentence only, I will consider the aspect of bail."

The announcement made by the court which declared Laxman guilty said, "The CBI has been able to establish the case of accepting Rs. 1 lakh bribe against Bangaru Laxman. Accused Bangaru Laxman stands convicted for the offence under Section 9 of the Prevention of Corruption Act."
