ISLAMABAD – The Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh declared that Pakistani Government had been successful in presenting “a good and balanced budget”.
Government disclosed $31 billion budget for the financial year starting from July 1. The unveiled budget made the opposition lawmakers to shout slogans and scuffles.
Dr Hafeez was surrounded by about 30 opposition parliamentarians mocking and shouting through his speech.
The minister highlighted that the main aims of the budget were to reduce inflation rate and improve economic stability and growth. Another purpose included collecting the tax from high income groups who initially avoid paying taxes.
“We promised tax payers that we would provide relief in the new budget and we have fulfilled that promise,” said the minister.
Talking about the major issues of electricity, Dr Hafeez said that the government had allocated Rs 183 billion in order to deal with the shortfall. “The problem will be solved when issues in the administrative infrastructure and other governance issues are resolved’ he said.
Developmental programs for generating electricity are being initiated,” he added. He then stated “Expenditure for generating electricity is more and electricity charges are less. The federal government has financed this gap of billions of rupees till now.”
The minister also declared that “Taking these spirit forward, all governmental expenditures will be reduced”. He said that the country was becoming self-reliant, “The country which used to import wheat and sugar is now capable of exporting them to other countries”.
