The Delhi gang-rape murder case trial began on Tuesday and will be continued on Wednesday. The court is determined to hear the case on daily basis for a speedy verdict. Witnesses including the victim’s friend who was present at the crime scene, doctors who treated the victim and other people present near the scene have started testifying.
Charges have been laid against five men and a minor who have pleaded not guilty. The minor will be dealt with accordance to juvenile court, and if convicted, will spend a maximum of three years in reformatory. If the five main suspects are proven guilty, they might face a death sentence.
The incident took place on December 16, when the victims boarded the bus at Munirka in south Delhi on December 16 and were robbed, stripped and thrown out of the bus some 40 minutes later. The suspects are involved in raping the young Indian girl who later died in a Singapore hospital. Ram Singh, Pawan, Vinay and Mukesh were taken into custody within two days of the crime while Akshay and the minor were caught on December 21. Mukesh is Ram Singh’s younger brother.
On Tuesday, the victim’s 53-year-old father addressed the media and said: “I want the world to know her [victim’s] name. She has awakened the nation’s consciousness. She is the daughter of the nation, not a victim.”
