Naheed Khan’s desire to form a separate political party with the name of Pakistan Peoples Party is bound to shake the roots of the governing party. The ruling party is registered with the name of Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarian while a close aide of Benazir Bhutto (Late) has filed an application with the Election Commission of Pakistan to register her own party with the name of Pakistan Peoples Party.

Khan has also submitted a list of office bearers of the proposed party along with the request to allocate the symbol of an arrow or a sword to her faction of the PPP for the upcoming elections. Khan is likely to attract the growing number of disgruntled members of PPP-P under the command of President Asif Ali Zardari. If Khan is successful in her agenda, the move might frighten the President and his allies.

Makhdoom Amin Fahim is the official president of Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPP-P) and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the co-chairman since the assassination of his mother and party chairperson in 2007. Khan has named herself as the president of proposed PPP, Fiaz Khan as the secretary general and Ibne Rizvi as the finance secretary.

Ever since the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, several members of PPP-P have shown discontent over party leadership and its ambiguous agenda. Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, a former chief minister of K-P already made his own faction called the PPP-Sharpo, now known as Qami Wattan Party. Benazir Bhutto’s brother Murtaza Bhutto also formed PPP-Shaheed Bhutto.

Though the deadline still remains March 10, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has received 5,303 applications from its members who are willing to contest for national and provincial seats as well as for the reserved quota for minorities and women.
