The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) claims to have kept a safe distance from Filipino occupants and Malaysian security forces. The chairman of MILF, one of Philippines largest groups, claims not to be involved in the confrontation between the Sulu armed men and Malaysia’s security forces in eastern Sabah.

According to Al-Haj Murad Ebrahim, the confrontation between Filipino interlopers and Malaysian armed forces is a matter for Kuala Lumpur and the Manila administration to solve.

“The problem there (confrontation between Sulu gunmen and Malaysia’s security forces) is between the Malaysian Government and the Philippines. We leave it to them to solve it. Our people are not involved in the intrusion. We don’t want to get involved in the matter, we don’t want to complicate it,” he said.

Negotiations between the two parties have consistently failed. Filipinos seem determined to occupy Sabah even if they have to sacrifice their lives. Malaysian authorities claim no amount of time can convince interlopers to relinquish their desires and return; hence, they dispatched fighter jets and ground troops in armored personnel carriers to attack the seaside village of Kampung Tanduo, Lahad Datu.

The MILF chairman said: “We are hopeful that the problem will be solved peacefully.”

On Wednesday, Malaysian forces embarked on the mission to hunt down armed Filipinos who successfully dodged the attack aimed at dispersing them. Malaysia’s police chief said followers of a self-styled Muslim sultan had scattered after an air and ground attack on Tuesday.

The armed group of Filipinos occupied the Malaysian state of Sabah on Borneo Island from the adjacent southern Philippines on February 12. They claim their inherent right on the land as they are the followers of a sultan.
