The Election Commission of Pakistan asked the aspiring candidates of upcoming elections to submit the amended nomination form which requires them to share some important information before getting clearance to partake in the general elections. The decision is deemed crucial and vital as it will act as a filtration process and warn the party leaders to select their nominees vigilantly or else they will have to bear a hefty cost.

The amendments have enhanced the image of Election Commission, particularly because until recently rumors had it that in view of the strong opposition being put up by the government, it will have to go by the previous forms – and thus paving a save path for tax dodgers, loan defaulters and criminals to reach the parliament. The decision has particularly proven that chief election commissioner Fakhruddin G Ebrahim has not succumbed to the pressures of political parties.

On the other hand, the government is aiming to hold elections before May 10, leaving very short time span for the ECP to scrutinize nomination papers. The strategy is to announce such a date for the elections that the commission would not get more than seven days for scrutiny period. Such strategies are meant to veil the corrupt politicians who fear scrutiny.

Despite Law Minister Farooq H Naek’s claim of insufficient time to enact the ECP’s legislative bill, an Election Commission member hinted that the commission might seek from the caretaker government the promulgation of the ordinance to get the legislative bill implemented. In such a scenario, the ECP would be able to get at least 14 days for the scrutiny period.
