National Accountability Bureau eyes the development projects in Punjab while CM Shahbaz Sharif has warmly welcomed the authority to probe mega projects for the satisfaction of all stakeholders. The Punjab government says it has nothing to hide, thus, it does not fear any sort of investigation.
Based on alleged rule violation by provincial government, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to launch an investigation and documents have been sought from the Punjab government, along with names of functionaries responsible for the award of contracts. Bus Rapid Transit System and Ring Road are two major projects in this investigation.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and his government have raised no objections when Transparency International Pakistan undertook a few provincial schemes for a similar kind of probe before NAB. Earlier, the Punjab government’s laptop scheme, Ujala programme and the Metro Bus project have been scrutinized by Transparency International Pakistan. According to the Punjab government, the Metro Bus project is worth PKR 30 billion. Conversely, opposition claims the project cost PKR 97 billion.
The Punjab government has recently established a Metrobus System from Gajjumata to Shahdara in Lahore, which is approximately 27km long running in the North-South direction. The project was completed in record time of 11 months. Key locations throughout the city are targeted to allow maximum number of citizens from surrounding areas to avail the bus services.
