Prison staff, family members and friends keenly await Ram Singh’s autopsy report after his body was found in Tihar Jail while he was in police custody. Singh allegedly committed suicide on Monday at 5:00 am. The deceased was involved in the Delhi-gang-rape case and was supposedly the main culprit.

According to Singh’s lawyer, the accused were no doubt in a lot of pressure and dismay; however, they were never suicidal. The lawyer alleges that Singh was satisfied with the way the case was developing.

VK Anand, Ram Singh’s lawyer, said, “The accused were upset over public sentiments initially but no point were they suicidal.”

Anand urged the CBI to look into the matter and bring to the public the truth behind the bars of Tihar jail. According to Singh’s family members, he had complained of being tortured in prison. The family has also requested for a CBI probe.

An official of the jail was quoted as saying, “Ram Singh’s three cell mates have revealed that he told them a few times since Saturday that he and his brother will certainly get a death term for their role in the rape case. Singh had felt his family would be finished, according to his cellmates.”

Whether it was suicide or murder, there seems to be a security lapse in Tihar Jail. The officials on duty are evidently responsible for the episode.

“It is a major lapse in security; certainly it is not a small incident. Action will be taken,” claimed Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, “Whatever happened was wrong. When the inquiry report comes up, appropriate action will be taken.”
