The self-proclaimed Raja Muda of Sulu – Azzimudie Kiram will face trial for leading an armed invasion of Laha Datu in Sabah. Attorney-general Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said Azzimudie will face trial in Malaysia even if he is not a Malaysian.

“I don’t care if (he is) Malaysian or not… you commit such an offence and we will go after you,” he said.

Azzimudie has allegedly fled out of the country since March 11 after Malaysian security forces launched a mission to take down the armed Sulu occupants who refused to leave Lahad Datu and return to Philippines. According to the Opposition, they have evidence to prove that Azzimudie was once employed as an assistant district officer in Sabah.

On the other hand, the investigation has revealed that one of the suspects – Holan Kalbi – was paid to sail to Sabah and occupy the disputed region. The government is trying to find out whether Kalbi really belongs to the sultan’s royal forces as Kiram has disowned him. Justice Secretary Leile de Lima said the joint team from the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group would look into Kalbi’s testimony.

Moreover, PM Datuk Seri Najib Razak has announced the formation of the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (ESSZONE), comprising 10 districts in Eastern Sabah, to ensure the safety of these areas and to prevent foreign incursions. Najib said safety in the ten areas – namely Kudat, Kota  Marudu, Pitas, Beluran, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad  Datu, Kunak, Semporna, and Tawau, will be commanded by  a committee under the Home Ministry and headed by the  Sabah Chief Minister, assisted by a Chief Executive Officer  and members who will be appointed later.
