The family of ATS Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Banerjee implies that his death might have been accidental instead of suicidal. Banerjee’s wife, Sushmita, claims that her husband may have fired at himself accidentally when he took his handkerchief out of his pocket.
Apparently, Banerjee had reached into his pocket to take out his handkerchief when his service revolver dropped on the floor and shot him in the head.
“Sushmita denied that a dispute between the couple led to the incident. She claimed Sanjay Banerjee was trying to take a handkerchief out of his pant pocket when his 0.32-mm pistol slipped out, fell to the ground and hit him in the temple by accident,” said a police official.
On the other hand, some officials believe that Banerjee had taken the gun out and was fidgeting with it when he accidentally shot himself. Reportedly, Banerjee had once pulled out his gun at home but was advised to put it away. There was no evidence that Banerjee was depressed before the shooting took place.
Banerjee had visited the Goa Portuguesa Hotel at the Ghodbunder Road in Thane on March 23 for lunch with his wife Sushmita and their two sons when the incident took place. Thane police commissioner KP Raghuvanshi confirmed the development, but said, “The probe is on and we have not concluded anything yet”.
