Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, Chairman Election Commission, assured that all the candidates will be provided with sufficient time to run their campaigns for the upcoming general election. He said the minimum campaign period stated in law has been stretched from seven to 11 days while the maximum period would be decided by the commission.

“If we allow it to be longer, it will be more expensive in terms of operational costs. We have discussed that the campaign period will not be too long or too short. The period will be a win-win situation for all parties,” he said.

Chairman Abdul Aziz also requested the political parties to remain modest during the election campaigns since all the political parties have been campaigning long and hard since the previous general election in 2008.

“To the point that I have even received feedback of politicians not getting enough sleep… We hope that we will not be accused of denying them enough time to campaign. I urge all political leaders to remind their supporters not to become emotional as this will not be the only elections we will have. We want all candidates to contest in a healthy environment and we will do our utmost in assisting all parties to achieve that,” said Abdul Aziz.

He said the 13th general election should be held at the latest by May 28, following the dissolution of the Dewan Rakyat today.

“If we were to start counting from April 3 today, it (60-day period) will end on June 3 but it will miss the Negeri Sembilan deadline of May 28… The school holidays are not our consideration. When the EC panel members meet, they will all present their views and will make a unanimous decision,” he said.
