Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh dies a week after his fellow inmates brutally attacked him in Lahore. The deceased was in a critical state ever since the incident. He fell into coma on Sunday and doctors said there were slim chances of his survival. However, Sarabjit’s death has infuriated Indians who now demand a strict action against Pakistan.
“Every Indian is asking about the steps our government is taking to send a strong message to Pakistan,” says Smriti Irani of the BJP.
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said India will send its own plane to Lahore and bring home the body. Sarabjit will be awarded with state honor while Punjab CM has promised to provide employment to both his daughters.
“My prayers go out to the family,” External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said.
On the other hand, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has promised to ensure steady clearance of all formalities while handing over the mortal remains to Indian High Commission.
“India’s Sarabjit Singh has been martyred, an Indian has been killed. Zardari killed him,” Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur complained.
Sarabjit was convicted for spying and was imprisoned in Pakistan for the last 21 years. His family had put immense pressure on the Indian government to bring him home. Responding to the undying requests, India’s foreign ministry had formally requested Pakistani government to take a sympathetic and humanitarian view of the case since Sarabjit was in a critical condition.
Sarabjit was involved in four bomb attacks that killed 14 people in Lahore and Faisalabad in 1990. His family consistently vouches for his innocence and alleges that he accidently crossed Pakistan-India border.
