National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has taken strict action against the two accused in Rental Power Projects (RPPs) corruption case by adding their names in the Exit Control List (ECL) on Monday. Earlier, the Bureau appeared reluctant in taking any extreme decisions since the main accused Raja Pervez Ashraf was then Prime Minister of Pakistan.

The NAB has called upon Ashraf – who has never been barred from leaving the country before – for interrogation on Tuesday. The immigration officials confirm that notification has been spread throughout the country and the managements of all the ports in Pakistan are aware of not allowing Ashraf to fly out of the country.

“Investigations in RPPs were already under way as per directions of the Supreme Court. The Naudero-II project is the first case where the former prime minister has been summoned, the rest of the cases will follow,” a NAB officer informed the media.

The apex court has directed the NAB to conduct its investigation and submit a comprehensive report by May 27, 2013. The bureau has confirm that investigation against 30 accused in 12 RPP cases is still in process while the officials are trying to gather hard evidence to build a strong case. During previous investigations, former finance minister Shaukat Tarin claimed that he cleared the payment for Naudero-II RPP only after approval from the prime minister and then minister for water and power Raja Pervez Ashraf. Tarin is one of the 12 accused in the RPPs corruption case.

  1. It is a commendable approach by the present NAB Chief to re-investigate
the charges against the former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in the
rental power (RPPS) corruption cases and has put his name on Exit Control
list ,along with all the persons suspected on similar charges.
My point of view is that in spite of the these serious charges of corruption
and irregularities, how he was allowed to contest the current General
Elections of 2013 which in my opinion is clear violation of Article 62
    Of the Constitution.
I would therefore suggest that names of those persons should also be put
On ECL who unlawfully exercised their power and defended the case of
ex-prime minister in allowing him to contest the Elections Inspite of serious
    charges of corruption against him.
